Meet Omar Lazo

Father. Education Advocate. Community Leader, Business Leader.

Omar Lazo is a proud Montgomery County resident, business owner, and father of three daughters currently enrolled in Montgomery County Public Schools. His children attend elementary, high school, and the Early College program at Montgomery College—giving him firsthand insight into the strength of our schools and the challenges many families experience navigating the system.

As a product of an immigrant household and a long-time resident of Montgomery County, Omar learned early the value of hard work, community, and opportunity. For more than 20 years, he has served his community in a range of leadership roles—all on a volunteer basis. Omar currently serves as a Trustee of Montgomery College and Chair of the Montgomery County Workforce Development Board, where he works to expand educational access, career pathways, and support for families across the county.

He is also a small business owner who understands what it means to balance budgets, manage teams, and build partnerships rooted in trust and respect. Omar brings a steady, pragmatic, and collaborative approach to problem-solving—grounded in real life experience.

Why Omar Is Running

Omar believes every child in Montgomery County deserves to feel safe, supported, and inspired at school. He is running for the Board of Education to:

  • Strengthen support for educators and ensure classrooms have the resources they need

  • Expand equitable access to academic and career programs, including language support, arts, STEM, and early college pathways

  • Improve communication and family engagement, so parents and caregivers are informed, included, and respected

  • Rebuild trust and transparency in decision-making and budgeting

Omar knows that great schools don’t just happen—they are built through partnership, honesty, and shared commitment. He is ready to bring his experience, his values, and his heart to the Board of Education to make sure every student, in every part of the county, has the opportunity to succeed.

Priorities to Strengthen Every School

As a father of three MCPS students, decades long community leader and, business owner, I’m focused on what works: support our educators, expand opportunity, be transparent with families, keep schools safe, and manage dollars responsibly.

  • Our teachers, paraeducators, and support staff are the foundation of our school system. When they are overwhelmed, under-supported, or stretched too thin, students feel it too.
    I will work to:

    • Reduce class sizes, especially in early grades

    • Increase planning time and reduce administrative burden

    • Ensure educators have the resources, staffing, and respect they deserve

A strong school system begins with supporting the people who make learning possible.

  • Description text goes hereWhere a student lives should not determine the quality of their education.
    I am committed to:

    • Strengthening pathways like Early College, career technical programs, IB, and magnet opportunities

    • Expanding bilingual and culturally responsive support services

    • Ensuring students with disabilities receive timely evaluations and robust services

Every child deserves the chance to discover their strengths and build their future.

  • Families deserve clarity, not confusion. Major decisions — including budgeting, safety, program changes, and boundary adjustments — must be made openly and communicated clearly.
    I will:

    • Ensure transparent and accessible budgeting practices

    • Increase communication and family engagement across all communities

    • Support real accountability and clear performance measures

Trust is built when information is shared honestly and consistently.

  • Students learn best when they feel safe — physically and emotionally.
    I will advocate for:

    • Fully funded mental health supports in every school

    • Stronger prevention and education around fentanyl and substance use

    • A clear, consistent safety plan that keeps classrooms focused on learning

A safe school is one where every child is seen, supported, and valued.

  • As a business owner and board leader, I understand how to manage budgets with discipline and transparency.
    I will work to:

    • Prioritize classroom investments and essential staffing

    • Address aging facilities and critical maintenance backlogs

    • Ensure long-term financial sustainability, not short-term fixes

Our schools must be excellent — and financially strong — for the next generation.
